There are trips you take to discover new places and others you take to understand where you come from. This was one of those.
More than 100 years ago, part of Carla's family left Menorca, Spain, and emigrated to Argentina. Since then, no one had returned to that exact spot. Until now.
This trip to Menorca wasn't just tourism. It was a search for family origins, a way to reconnect with those family roots in Spain that had been on pause for generations.
The trip to Menorca to find our roots
Arriving in Menorca wasn't just changing destinations. It was entering a family story that began long before us.
With very little information — old records, names, dates and an address — we began a search for family roots in Spain. We knew it wasn't going to be easy. The surname Pons is very common on the island, which made everything more complex.
But beyond the difficulty, there was a clear intention: to understand Carla's family origin in Menorca.
As we got closer, the feeling became more and more intense. We didn't know if we were going to find anything concrete, but we were already in the place where it all began.
The family house in Menorca: between history and emotions
After searching for hours, we finally arrived.
The address matched. The street matched. The surroundings made sense.
We didn't have absolute confirmation, but everything indicated we were in front of the possible family house in Menorca where her ancestors lived.
The structures, the materials, the old details... everything reflected the passage of time and reinforced that connection with family history.
It was more than finding a house. It was feeling that that place still had something of its own.
Rebuilding the family history in Spain
A key part of this trip was talking to the local people.
Neighbors, strangers, people who, without knowing us, got involved in the story. Each one contributed something: a name, a reference, a possible connection.
This search for ancestors in Menorca wasn't linear. It was fragmented, emotional and, at many moments, uncertain.
But that's precisely where the value lies. Not in having all the answers, but in rebuilding the family history step by step.
What it means to find your family roots
We didn't find all the information. We didn't completely close the story. But we found something more important.
A place that is now part of our identity.
Menorca stopped being just a destination in Spain. It became a point of origin. A place we now know we belong to, even though generations have passed.
Understanding your family roots isn't just about knowing facts. It's about living it. Being there. Feeling it.
Spain, identity and the value of travel
This trip wasn't just about Menorca or Spain. It was about identity.
About understanding that there are family stories that remain alive even after more than 100 years. About accepting that there are parts of us that come from places we never saw.
And above all, it was about Carla.
Being the first to return, to investigate, to rebuild that family history in Menorca, gives a completely different value to this entire journey.
It wasn't an ending. It was the beginning of something much bigger.
